Here is his story,

Jaxon Da Costa was born on the 17th of December 2012 (3.5weeks early) with sever rhesus disease. His condition was only picked up by drs 2 weeks before he was born. The hospital where he was due to be born at refused to take him as they believed they did not have the right equipment to be able to treat him.

We were sent to a new dr in Brisbane at the Mater Mothers hospital, they were set to induce us within one week but an angel burst his bubble and he came one week early from the induction date. We were to learn after that if we had waited the week we would most likely have a very different story to tell and would most likely not have this gorgeous little man here with us today.

He was taken away right after birth an placed in ICU under monitors and the maximum phototherapy they had. He developed sever jaundice and was pushing the levels associated with brain damage. He was to stay masked to protect his eyes and uncovered for two weeks under the phototherapy lights. He was blood tested for bilirubin levels every 2-4hrs.

Within the first week the antibodies attacking his system that were there due to me being a negative blood type and him being a positive, had destroyed most of his red cells and he was severely anaemic. His levels were dangerously low as the drs had been focused on his bilirubin levels and missed his hemoglobin. He was limp and virtually non responsive and has a tachycardia a very fast heart rate and needed a blood transfusion right away.

One week later he needed another blood transfusion and the drs said it was extremely rare to need another transfusion after two but he went on to have 3 more, 5 in total so far. He was aloud out of hospital after 3weeks and went back in for a few days at a time for more transfusions.

He also struggled with maintaining good oxygen levels after his transfusions and would need to go back on oxygen for a few days and have lasik a diuretic to help get rid of excess fluid build up in the lungs.

S&N the blood group said had the highest levels of antibodies that they have ever seen. Due to the many blood transfusions he had marrow suppression which also needs to be monitored closely for his first year.

He is stable now, he is on the lower end of hemoglobin levels but not low enough to warrant another transfusion yet. He is being monitored with blood tests and is the only baby in Australia to be trialing a new hemoglobin spot check machine from a big american medical company that supplies our hospitals with many machines. His development seems to be slow so that is being monitored and when he is one we will need to have him tested to make sure he has caught nothing from his many transfusions.

All your prayers and thoughts gave us the strength to get through and continue to inspire us. God only uses his strongest fighters for his toughest challenges, if he leads you to it, he will bring you through it!

About the Photo shoot – Gold Coast baby photography studio session

We had been so excited to finally meet Jaxy, it was to great to him looking healthy and happy, what a little legend, what a little fighter, we got to spend about an hour with him, he has the most illuminating smile.

His mother Michelle is a well known hair/make-up artist/stylist, one of the best that I’ve had the pleasure to work with, I was really honoured that she wanted me to shoot her little miracle boy.

As you can see above Jaxon isn’t at the point of sitting up yet unassisted, hence the little help from my assistant Kym to prop him up, with baby photography and even more so with newborn photography we always have a hand on or close by just for safety.
